1518 Bar & Grill
After months and months of planning and preparation, 1518 Bar and Grill, at 1518 Sansom Street is open for business. The former Black Cat Cigar shop has been transformed into a shiny new bar and restaurant and over the past week, the staff was hired, trained and already serving customers, as of St. Paddy’s.
Remnants of Black Cat still exist in the space with a walk-in humidor and cigar cases still lingering in the basement. But upstairs, the bar showpiece has got to be an antique register – a gift that was given to the owner.
Manager, Matthew Geiger, a former interior designer has plans for the look of the inside and the possibility of bringing in local artists’ collections to display on the walls.
There are about eight deuces split into twos and fours in the front of the space, a half dozen high tops, lining the wall adjacent the bar and, of course, the focal point of 1518, the bar that seats 15. There are 10 beers on tap like Allagash, Blue Moon, Dogfish Head and Yards, as well as beers by the bottle and a full liquor program featuring some interesting spirits.
“Not everyone has Goslings, Patron XO has been really big lately, we have a Honey Liquor which is amazing and the Chocolate Martini, made with fresh espresso the 360 Double Chocolate Vodka, a little Baileys and Kahlua and it’s like dessert,” said Geiger.
Plus, the prices are very reasonable, like a Patron Margarita for just $10 and that Chocolate Martini for just $7.50.
The wines are beyond approachable at just $5 and $5.50 per glass and $20 and $22 per bottle.
Happy hour drink special specifics are still TBD, but the happy hour apps are locked in for the time being at just $5 for Hummus and Pita, Calamari, Mussels (PEI) White and Salt and Pepper Wings.
The menu prepared by Chef Agron Hajdari, on a whole has a Mediterranean flare with Israeli and even some Italian flavors. The Burger and Portabello Reuben have already been winners, but its the T.E.D. or Thanksgiving Every Day – a sandwich with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo that sounded particularly original. Lunch and dinner debuted on Thursday but tonight, 1518 will be debuting the entrees including a Lamb Shank, Crispy Chicken and even Penne Bolognaise.
With a juke box and two TV’s, 1518 has everything you need in a Center City bar, but with prices that will keep you coming back.
